CARRIE'S PRIORITIES:
Since the early 90's, I have wanted the DEVELOPMENT OF A REFRESHED BEACH 1 and a revitalization of the main street. I would like to continue with the progression of the addition of a hotel in the Beach 1/Main street corridor, not only to attract bigger events to Wasaga Beach, but things like work conferences, weddings and possibilities for local businesses to capture overnight tourist visits to our town and to utilize the potential of the twin pad arena to host big tournaments and events.
Secondly, I would like to see the addition of BUSINESSES AND CORPORATIONS to plant roots in Wasaga Beach for many reasons... JOBS for our residents that are competitively aligned with those jobs our residents commute to larger cities for, more tax dollars from businesses to contribute to projects like replacing infrastructure and viably increasing the town budget to be able to afford new amenities for the residents to enjoy.
Thirdly, I would love to better serve our community by addressing topics like AFFORDABLE HOUSING, food insecurities, the homeless, senior isolation, mental health and advocating for better jobs for more sustainable income for our residents, which may include entrepreneurial opportunities, training in the trades and utilizing venues in our community for the arts and makers to showcase and sell their creations.
And the last priority would be to ensure that Wasaga Beach is the Destination of Choice! Through innovation and revitalization, not only will tourists and locals alike choose to come to Wasaga Beach for the tranquility of the beach and the river but for the entertainment and culture our residents and businesses have to offer. As a town with tourism as our main economic driver, let's pull together and be the place, once again, that people will want to spend their vacation dollars enjoying.
As a resident, I understand that infrastructure, roads, buildings and assets don't last forever. Nobody likes to see an increase in taxes. Having the right people on council and the right staff at the town is vital in the careful allocation of town dollars. As we need to pay for our assets that we currently have and operational costs, it is important to look beyond this council term and think about costs that are needed 5, 10 and 50 years down the road.
Businesses making Wasaga Beach home will help not only with jobs for our local residents, but will also help to bring in more tax dollars to allocate further in this process. Currently, the percentage of taxes that is paid by residents vs. businesses in our town is exceptionally high. Adding more businesses will alleviate some of the burden on our residents.
